Truth and Reconciliation
On Monday, September 29th, all RD Parker students went on a walk in honour of The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. It began at 2:00, and happened during D&E blocks. Students were called down to the front of the school, where the walk began, and all students took off as a group. The walk took a route down towards the Bush Plane Monument by the Burntwood River. This monument is to acknowledge that these planes were used to transport Indigenous children to residential schools. After reaching the destination, students were invited to walk back to the school and enjoy a delicious meal of bannock and stew. Many students and staff wore orange shirts to show support, and lots of people showed off their beautiful cultural outfits, such as ribbon skirts or shirts.
Schools all around Canada go for this walk every year, to remember and spread awareness about the history of residential schools. RD Parker is proud to show support in any way they can. Students were glad to get an afternoon off of classes, and get in some physical activity, while also walking for a crucial cause. It was a very nice day, and everyone was happy to be out with the sun on their faces. The day after this event, September 30th, students had the day off in memorial to commemorate and learn more about the legacy of residential schools in Canada. This day is very important, as the tragedies of residential schools still affect many Canadians every day. Classes continued as usual on Wednesday, October 1st.
