New Athletic Course Options!

R.D Parker Collegiate has great changes in store for our athletics department! There is a new course for students who would like to take agency of their fitness journey. Fitness Focus 10/20S was introduced last semester to encourage young students coming up from middle school to spend more time in the gym. Fitness Focus 10/20S is unlike a traditional gym class that provides a generalized physical education. The course spends a majority of active time working out in the weight room. It also has a secondary focus on games, sports and other physical activities that are found in regular P.E classes.

Mr. Patterson, a member of the RDPC athletics department also recommended Fitness Focus 10/20S for student athletes who would like to supplement their physical conditioning. It’s a way to earn a credit while keeping your body in good shape, which is a necessary part of sports training due to the competitive environment. He also highlighted that students enrolled in the course saw measurable improvement in their health and fitness. The result was that people enjoyed coming to class more and showed greater self motivation. Mr. Patterson joyfully recalled that many students he taught last semester still went to the weight room afterschool.

Recreation Management and Athletic Leadership is a new course currently in development. RDPC hopes to implement the brand-new program next year as an elective for either Gr. 11s or Gr. 12s. It is designed to prepare students with interests in kinesiology or physical education by teaching skills in planning/organizing sports and leisure events. The RDPC athletics department endorses Recreation Management as a great opportunity to serve the school community by getting involved in lunch time and afterschool intramurals. Many aspects of the course directly draw inspiration from topics taught in Physical Education university programs. Course selection is currently underway, Fitness Focus 10/20S and Recreation Management are both excellent choices for individuals looking for a future in sports.
