Fueling Success: A New Free Lunch Initiative

In an inspiring development for student health and well-being, the School District of Mystery Lake is excited to welcome a nutrition program which provides free lunches, and snacks to all our students. The Manitoba government is rolling out this program and says it will expand offerings across all of the province’s schools. Here at R.D Parker Collegiate, this initiative serves up to 100 to 120 students each day, not only those in the high school but also the off-campus programs, along with the mature student program. The program is set up to ensure that every student has access to nutritious meals, which is crucial for their overall academic success, growth and development here at R.D. Parker collegiate.

Mr. Prince is the enthusiastic man behind the scenes here at our school who makes all of this possible. He is a provincial certified food safe instructor with an immense amount of experience in the culinary world. He takes pride in planning, prepping and preparing the food every morning. His menu differs everyday and can range from sandwiches and soups all the way to classic comfort foods like mac and cheese.

This program has been running in our school since the first week of September, and with the positive effects of the program already being felt throughout the school community. By eliminating the barrier of cost, the school division is taking a significant step forward in addressing food insecurity, allowing students to focus on their studies rather than their next meal. This program not only promotes a higher level of participation and concentration in classes but it can also be a great incentive for higher attendance rates, with the guarantee of a meal. This grant is a powerful step toward ensuring that every student has the nourishment they need to thrive.
