Culture Day
On Tuesday, November 19th, the students of R.D.P.C celebrated a vibrant Culture Day. On this special day, the students were encouraged to dress in their traditional cultural attire, making the event both colorful and educational. The purpose of the day was to bring together people from different countries to celebrate and appreciate the richness of their cultures. Through activities such as performances, music, art, and open discussions, it provided an opportunity for everyone to share and learn from each other’s unique traditions. The event was held in the school theatre, where students gathered to participate in an experience that would not only teach them about the importance of Culture Day, but also promote inclusivity and respect for all.
To make the celebration even more special, the school invited two presenters from Winnipeg: a Nigerian woman and an Indigenous man. They both brought unique cultural perspectives. The Nigerian woman invited students to join her on stage for a traditional dance while she played lively beats, sang, and danced. The Indigenous man performed a powerful hoop dance, which tells stories through rhythmic movements. The excitement was recognizable, and what made it even more inspiring was seeing students with special disabilities join in the hoop dance, demonstrating that cultural expression and joy have no boundaries and can be enjoyed by everyone, regardless of ability.
The school’s goal for Culture Day was not just to celebrate cultural diversity, but also to teach students the importance of embracing all cultures. In a country like ours, made up of people from all over the world, it’s crucial to understand the rich traditions, accents, and customs that each person brings. Students were encouraged to feel proud of their heritage, whether it’s their accent, culture, or traditions. Understanding and respecting differences, instead of being ashamed of them, creates a better environment for all of us.
We also wish to inform you that the second part of the Culture Day at R.D.P.C will be held in April of 2025. We are hoping that this time more people will join the event, so that we can all explore and appreciate the nuances of a vast array of cultural expression. Hope to see you all there!
